The new Indonesian administration led by President Prabowo Subianto began its term in October 2024. Already President Prabowo has sought to make his mark with appointment of the largest cabinet in Indonesia's history. This suggests the president intends to demonstrate a consensual leadership style in keeping with his recent predecessors. On the other hand, Prabowo's military background, employment of nationalist rhetoric during the presidential election campaign, and retention of strong ties within the Indonesian elite point to tight control of the government. Following his inauguration, Prabowo spoke of an activist role for Indonesia on the world stage. What will this mean for Australia, bilaterally and as we navigate an increasingly uncertain regional environment?
