Bernadette Pinnell

Dr.

Bernadette grew up in Northern Ireland. She has established businesses in New York, UK, PNG, Sydney and NZ.

Bernadette’s doctoral research explored the social sustainability of urban renewal projects in Australia. After 15 years in Sydney, she returned to New Zealand to be part of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority following the devastating earthquake there that destroyed 3,000 homes in 2011.

Later she established an affordable housing organisation, Compass Housing NZ, in partnership with developers and government The organisation now accommodates over 600 households and has 500 new homes in the pipeline. In 2022 she was awarded the Westpac NZ Woman of Influence Award.

In 2015, Bernadette joined Home in Place, an Australian NGO focused on affordable housing. She is working on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) Housing project to deliver 3,000 affordable homes in the Pacific with development partners, the Fiji Government and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

She is also leading the expansion of Home in Place in Seattle in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Until recently, Bernadette chaired the Urban Development Institute of New Zealand. She is convening a Global Indigenous Housing Conference in Hawaii later this year.
