The golden anniversary of ASEAN-Australia relations provides an opportunity to review how the relationship is travelling. Following their summit in Melbourne last March, ASEAN and Australian Leaders issued a Vision Statement setting out their strategic vision for the next 50 years. It calls for open, inclusive and transparent rules-based regional architecture in the Indo-Pacific region, in which ASEAN is central.
But in an increasingly uncertain and contested geopolitical environment in our region, can these lofty ideals be brought to fruition? What advantages does ASEAN membership confer and is the Association still relevant? How will closer cooperation between ASEAN and Australia benefit security, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific? Join us as three leading ASEAN Heads of Mission in Canberra, the High Commissioners of Malaysia, HE Ms Sharrina Abdullah,and Singapore, HE Mr Anil Kumar Nayar, and the Indonesian Ambassador, HE Dr Siswo Pramono, share their perspectives on ASEAN and ASEAN-Australia relations.

A graduate of Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Psychology, she have held key roles in Malaysia's Foreign Service, including as the Malaysian Ambassador to Senegal and Switzerland, as well as, various roles in bilateral desks and the National ASEAN Secretariat in Malaysia. Outside work, she enjoys playing table tennis and badminton.
HE Dr. Siswo Pramono
Dr. Siswo Pramono, LL.M. is the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to Australia and the Republic of Vanuatu. Prior to this position, he was Director General/Head of The Foreign Policy Strategy Agency, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. He attained Ph.D degree from the Australian National University, and LL.M degree from Monash University, Australia. Dr. Pramono completed his professional diplomatic training in the diplomatic schools of Indonesian Foreign Ministry, Jakarta, and the Clingendael Institute of International Relations, The Netherlands. As a career diplomat, he served in various Indonesian diplomatic missions abroad, including The Indonesian Embassies in The Netherlands and Germany. As a scholar, Dr. Pramono is a non-tenured Lecturer in various universities, namely Airlangga University, Cendrawasih University, as well as a fellow at the The Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI) and Charles Darwin University, Australia.

HE Anil Kumar Nayar
His Excellency Anil Kumar Nayar was appointed High Commissioner of Singapore to Australia on 19th July 2022. Mr Nayar joined the Singaporean Foreign Service in June 1993 and previously served as Ambassador to Indonesia (2012-2022) and Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium (2006-2012), where he was concurrently accredited to the Netherlands, Luxembourg and the European Union.

He has held various roles in the Foreign Service, where he was Southeast Asia Director prior to being posted overseas. The Ambassador was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Silver) in 2005 and subsequently the Public Administration Medal (Gold) in 2008, in recognition of his work as the Co-Agent for Singapore’s case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the Pedra Branca territorial dispute. He was also awarded the Long Service Medal in 2016.
