2024 AIIA ACT Branch Annual General Meeting (AGM)


The 2024 AIIA ACT Branch Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held from 5.30pm-6:00pm on Wednesday 18 September at the AIIA Conference Centre, Stephen House, 32 Thesiger Court, Deakin, ACT. Please note that the AGM is for financial AIIA (ACT) members only. It will be held in-person and not be broadcast online via Zoom.


The AGM will be followed by a presentation by Australia's Ambassador for First Nations people Justin Mohamed. The presentation will immediately follow the AGM from 6:00pm-7:00pm and will be live streamed online to registrants not attending the AGM. Drinks and nibbles will be available for members attending the AGM and presentation in person from 5:15pm.


Nomination for positions on Council and proxy forms for the AGM are available here. Nominations must be received by the Public Officer at hmcmichael@tpg.com.au, by 15 September 2024, using the form provided. Notice of proxies are required 24 hours before the scheduled start of the meeting and should be addressed to the President. Presentation by Ambassador Justin Mohamed: 'A First Nations approach to foreign policy?'

A First Nations approach to foreign policy aims to embed First Nations perspectives across the gamut of international work in development, trade and investment, intellectual property, and climate resilience. For Australia, a First Nations approach to foreign policy presents the full story of who we are, our rich heritage, and the modern diversity of our nation. Join us to hear Australia's inaugural Ambassador for First Nations People, Mr Justin Mohamed, speak about his work leading the Office for First Nations International Engagement in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

    Ambassador

    Mr Justin Mohamed is Australia’s inaugural Ambassador for First Nations People, a position he was appointed to by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Penny Wong, in March 2023.

    Mr Mohamed is a Gooreng Gooreng man from Bundaberg in Queensland. He has a strong connection to community having worked for decades in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, as well as in the government and corporate sectors, on issues spanning health, social justice and reconciliation.

    Mr Mohamed was most recently Deputy Secretary of Aboriginal Justice in the Victorian Government. He has also held the positions of Chief Executive Officer for Reconciliation Australia and Chairperson of the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation, and he has represented Indigenous organisations internationally including at the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

    Mr Mohamed is married to Narrunga Kaurna woman Dr Janine Mohamed, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, First Nations at the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). He has five children.

    Mr Mohamed holds an Advanced Diploma of Business Management from the University of Ballarat.
